57 Year Journey for a hero – he’s finally at rest!

I knew nothing of SGT Cornelius H. Charlton until recently when I was asked by a friend and a hero in his own right, to photograph SGT Charlton’s final honors at Arlington National Cemetery and prepare a memorial book of the honors.

It was fitting that on 12 NOV 2008, a day after Veterans’ Day, that this American Hero was laid to rest at the United States of America’s national shrine, Arlington National Cemetery.

SGT Charlton, was in the US Army, in the 24th Infantry Regiment (Buffalo Soldiers) of the 25th Infantry Division, fighting in the Korean War and killed in action. Because of his leadership, actions & bravery he was awarded the Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart… Over time, this hero was honored with many distinctions, including a US Naval Ship, the USNS Charlton which was put in service in 1999.
